Roulette
Roulette is an exciting game of chance that provides plenty of action for players and spectators alike. Since Roulette is one of the easiest casino games to play and understand, it also means that the house enjoys a comparatively large edge over players but if you're into to fun, then let the wheel spin!
The roulette wheel consists of 37 or 38 numbered slots: numbers 1 to 36, a zero, and a double zero too - in the case of American roulette. The betting layout consists of every individual number as well as a host of "outside" or combinations of numbers. Once the players have made their bets, the dealer spins the wheel and a ball. After several seconds, the ball lands in one of the numbered slots.
Double zero roulette wheels give the house an added advantage. However, if a casino offers both, it usually means that the single zero tables have a high minimum.
European roulette also follows the "imprisonment" rule, which states that if the ball lands in zero all even money bets are imprisoned. If on the next spin the bet wins the wager is returned. If the next spin is another zero then half the bet is returned. If the bet otherwise loses on the next spin then the house collects the full bet. The "imprisonment" rule also lowers the house edge.
Interestingly enough, roulette chips have no value denomination printed on them. Each roulette table comes with six to eight sets of different colored chips, each set consisting of 300 chips. When a player buys-in, they get their own color and the value would be the buy-in divided by the number of chips received. The dealer places a token on top of the dealer's stack of that color of chips to indicate the value.
There are a number of different betting options available:
Straight Up - This is a wager on a single number, including zero and double zero.
Split Bet - This is a wager on two adjacent numbers in the roulette table, which is placed on the line dividing the two numbers.
Street Bet - These bets cover three numbers. The chip is placed on the outer right boundary line of the roulette table, next to the corresponding row of three numbers.
Corner Bet - Corner bets cover four numbers. The chip is placed on the cross where the four numbers intersect.
Five Bet - This bet covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. The chip is placed on the outer right boundary line of the roulette table, between 00 and 3.
Line Bet - A line bet covers the six different numbers in two rows of three numbers. The chip is placed on outer right boundary line of the roulette table, where the line dividing the two rows intersects it.
Column Bet - On the side of the roulette table are three areas marked "2 to 1". By placing your chip in one of these boxed areas, you mark all twelve numbers above it (not including 0 and 00.)
Dozen Bet - You can bet on predetermined groups of twelve numbers by placing your chip in one of the three boxed areas marked "1st 12", "2nd 12", or "3rd 12".
Red/Black, Even/Odd, Low/High Bets - A bet placed in one of these boxed areas on the side of the table covers half of the roulette numbers (excluding 0 and 00). Each box covers 18 numbers.
All reputable casinos provide a detailed breakdown of all bets and betting option payoffs in order to help you to determine the exact payoffs according to the specific casino wheel.
Once the dealer spins the wheel, he declares, "No more bets." When the ball falls on a number, the dealer places an icon on the corresponding number on the table and clears away all chips not associated with that number. After the dealer pays off all the winners, he removes the icon and all bets are on again.
By scattering your bets on the roulette table, you will increase your odds of winning more in the long run. Instead of betting a stack of chips straight up on your lucky number, place only one chip straight up on your favorite number, and use the rest to place corner bets. If you win, use your winnings to increase your bets. If you lose, go back to the minimum bet.
Remember that no one number is better than any other so simply choose your lucky number and sit back and enjoy while the wheel spins.
